Lesson 1 Heroes Explain that tall tales are stories about a hero.Identify a characteristic or action that makes a character a hero.
Lesson 2 Humorous Solutions Explain that tall tales are stories with funny solutions to a problem.Identify a funny solution to a problem and explain why it is funny.
Lesson 3 Exaggeration Identify examples of exaggeration in a tall tale.Explain that exaggeration is a characteristic of tall tales.

Unit Extension Ideas

  • Using other tall tales, students should be expected to identify heroes,  the funny ways problems are solved, and examples of exaggeration.
  • If Setting has been introduced, students can illustrate the setting of a favorite tall tale, especially aspects of the setting that have been exaggerated.
  • Compare and contrast two heroes from different tall tales.
  • Classify and categorize events in the story as fantasy or realistic.
  • Students can illustrate and write about themselves with exaggerated strength and size as if they were a hero in a tall tale.
  • Students can explain about how Paul Bunyan might help them solve a problem at school.
