Teacher Modeling
will explain that procedural texts use sequence clue words to help make the order of the steps clear. I will add this to my Characteristics of Procedural Texts Chart that I started in Lesson 1 (example provided). Sequence clue words are words that help readers know where in sequence a step belongs. They tell readers when to do something. Examples might include, “First,” “Next,” “Last,” “After,” and “Then.” I will model how to identify the sequence clue words in Let’s Make a Cake by Mary Hill and use them to put the steps in order on the board. Since this how-to book has sequence clue words, I will write the title on my chart.
-
Think Check
Ask: "How did I identify sequence clue words in a “how-to” text?" Students should respond that you looked for words that told you when or in what order to do something. You looked for words such as, “First,” “Next,” “Last,” “After,” and “Then.”
-
Guided Practice
will read Let’s Make Tacos by Mary Hill and work together to identify the sequence clue words and the steps they are connected to in the first half of the book. We will record the title and examples of the sequence words we found on our chart and explain why these are important features of a “how-to” book.
-
Independent Practice
will draw a line from the sequence clue words in Let’s Make Tacos to the step that they are connected to (Independent Practice Worksheet provided). You will share your worksheets with the class and explain how you know this is a “how-to,” or procedural text.
