Lesson 1: Rhyming Words

Lesson Plan

Learning Goal
Explain that nursery rhymes have rhyming words.
Identify rhyming words in a nursery rhyme.
Duration
Approximately 50 minutes
Necessary Materials
Provided: Unit Example Chart, “Humpty Dumpty,” “Three Blind Mice,” Independent Practice Worksheet
Not Provided: chart paper, markers
  • Teacher Modeling

will explain that one characteristic of nursery rhymes is that they have rhyming words. I will add this characteristic to my Characteristics of Nursery Rhymes Chart (Example Chart is provided in Unit Teacher and Student Materials). Rhyming words are words that sound the same at the end of the word but are different at the beginning. I will show students two sets of words that rhyme, such as “pat” and” mat,” read them aloud to hear the same sound, and then underline the letters that sound the same at then end of the word. I will model how to identify the first pair of rhyming words in the nursery rhyme, “Humpty Dumpty” (included in the unit) by listening for words that sound the same and underlining words that have the same ending sounds. I will note that usually rhyming words in a nursery rhyme come at the end of a line or sentence.

  • Think Check

Ask: "How do I identify rhyming words in a story?" Students should answer that you listen for words that sound the same at the end. You can look at the words, and underline words with similar endings, but have different beginning sounds.

  • Guided Practice

will continue to read the nursery rhyme, “Humpty Dumpty” and work together to identify the next pair of rhyming words. We will reflect that there were many rhyming words in the rhyme that make it a nursery rhyme, so we will add “Humpty Dumpty” to our chart, along with an example pair of rhyming words identified. We will read and listen to “Three Blind Mice” (included in this unit).

  • Independent Practice

will listen to the nursery rhyme “Three Blind Mice.” Then, you will write or draw two words that you hear that rhyme. The teacher may need to read the poem several times so you can identify the rhyming words. We will add our words to the chart. You will explain how you know this is a nursery rhyme. (Independent Practice Worksheet is provided.)

Build Student Vocabulary sight

Tier 2 Word: sight
Contextualize the word as it is used in the story “Did you ever see such a sight in your life, as three blind mice?”
Explain the meaning student-friendly definition) A sight is something that you can look at. Sight is also one of our five senses. It is our “seeing” sense. Something that is a sight is something that we can see with our eyes.
Students repeat the word Say the word sight with me: sight.
Teacher gives examples of the word in other contexts The airplanes were a great sight! I love to look at them flying through the air. Seeing the family celebrate my birthday together was a happy sight.
Students provide examples Tell me about a great sight that you have seen? Start by saying, “One great sight that I saw was ________________________________.”
Students repeat the word again. What word are we talking about? sight
Additional Vocabulary Words blind, carving

Build Student Background Knowledge

After reading “Humpty Dumpty,” explain to students that the character, Humpty Dumpty, is an egg. Eggs come from many different kinds of animals, such as birds and fish. Since eggs come from different animals, they are different colors and sizes. Humpty Dumpty was an egg with a hard shell; that is why he cracked and was so hard to put back together. Tell students that not all eggs have a hard shell. Sea turtle eggs are soft and need to be carefully protected. Soft or hard, the egg has everything a baby animal needs to develop, except the warmth from a parent animal.
