Teacher Modeling
will explain that another characteristic of fairy tales is that they have good and evil characters. I will add this characteristic to my Characteristics of Fairy Tales Chart that I started in Lesson 1 (see example). A good character is someone who is honest, friendly, kind, hardworking, and cares about other people. An evil character is someone who is selfish, greedy, and unkind. I can tell which characters are good or evil by identifying and thinking about their actions. If an action is selfish, the character is probably evil. If an action is caring, the character is probably good. I will read the first half of Snow White by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm. I will identify a character’s actions, and their actions to decide whether the character is good or evil. Note: Since there is only one evil character in the story, use the Direct Teaching to identify a good character.
-
Think Check
Ask: "How do I identify good and evil characters in a fairy tale?" Students should answer that you identify the characters and their actions in the story. If the actions are unkind and mean, you can conclude that the character is probably evil, but if the actions are kind, you can conclude that the character is probably good.

Guided Practice
will read the second half of Snow White, and discuss the other characters and their actions. We will work together to identify the characters as good or evil. We will reflect that we have identified both good and evil characters in the fairy tale, so we will add the title of the story to our chart, along with examples of good and evil characters.
-
Independent Practice
will illustrate one evil character and one good character from Snow White and write one action for each that shows why they are good or evil (Independent Practice Worksheet is provided). You will explain aloud how you know this story is a fairy tale.
