  • Teacher Modeling

will explain that another characteristic of fairy tales is that they have good and evil characters. I will add this characteristic to my Characteristics of Fairy Tales Chart that I started in Lesson 1 (see example). A good character is someone who is honest, friendly, kind, hardworking, and cares about other people. An evil character is someone who is selfish, greedy, and unkind. I can tell which characters are good or evil by identifying and thinking about their actions. If an action is selfish, the character is probably evil. If an action is caring, the character is probably good. I will read the first half of Snow White by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm. I will identify a character’s actions, and their actions to decide whether the character is good or evil. Note: Since there is only one evil character in the story, use the Direct Teaching to identify a good character.

  • Think Check

Ask: "How do I identify good and evil characters in a fairy tale?" Students should answer that you identify the characters and their actions in the story. If the actions are unkind and mean, you can conclude that the character is probably evil, but if the actions are kind, you can conclude that the character is probably good.

  • Guided Practice

will read the second half of Snow White, and discuss the other characters and their actions. We will work together to identify the characters as good or evil. We will reflect that we have identified both good and evil characters in the fairy tale, so we will add the title of the story to our chart, along with examples of good and evil characters.

  • Independent Practice

will illustrate one evil character and one good character from Snow White and write one action for each that shows why they are good or evil (Independent Practice Worksheet is provided). You will explain aloud how you know this story is a fairy tale.

Build Student Vocabulary jealousy

Tier 2 Word: jealousy
Contextualize the word as it is used in the story “The queen’s heart was filled with jealousy when she heard these words. She called for a hunter and ordered him to take Snow White into the forest, kill her, and bring back the girl’s heart.”
Explain the meaning student-friendly definition) Jealousy is the feeling of wanting something that someone else has. The queen’s heart was full of jealousy because Snow White was more beautiful than she was. She wanted to be more beautiful than Snow White.
Students repeat the word Say the word jealousy with me: jealousy.
Teacher gives examples of the word in other contexts I think she was feeling jealous about my new video game. I try not to get jealous when someone has something that I want. Jealousy is not a good feeling.
Students provide examples Have you ever experienced jealousy? Tell me about by saying “Once, I was feeling jealous when ______________________.”
Students repeat the word again. What word are we talking about? jealousy.
Additional Vocabulary Words vain, poisoned

Build Student Background Knowledge

Pause on page 8 while reading Snow White. Explain to students that a mirror is a flat or curved surface made of glass that has had a special coating put on it that reflects the light. We use mirrors to look at ourselves and see how we appear to others. The only other animal that can recognize themselves in the mirror is a chimpanzee! Mirrors are also used in science. They can be found in telescopes that allow us to look more closely at the stars.
