Build Background Knowledge

Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing your students to forensic science. Explain that forensic science is the use of science to solve a crime. Forensic scientists analyze evidence to help police detectives identify and find a criminal or understand how a crime happened. Forensic scientists might analyze a fingerprint left behind at a crime scene. Each human's fingerprint is unique. A forensic scientist might also analyze tracks left by the criminal's shoes. For example, the kind of dirt left behind by a shoe might tell you where the criminal was just before the crime or what type of shoes the criminal was wearing. Forensic scientists can also analyze blood splatter, bullet holes, ink, and handwriting. To learn more about handwriting analysis, read the Textual Analysis passage for this unit.
