Build Background Knowledge

Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing the origins of the Atlantic slave trade. Show the route that traders used to bring slaves to the Americas. Also, explain the difference between slavery and indentured servitude. In Chapter 1, Rosa Parks explains that her White, Irish relatives on her mother's side were brought to the United States by ship, but just because they were White did not mean that they were free. Poor White people were brought as "indentured servants." Like slaves, indentured servants were considered personal property, which meant that they could be sold, or passed down to future generations. They were used as cheap, or free, labor to build early America. Many indentured servants chose to come to the New World because of poverty in Europe. The rule was that an indentured servant could work their way out of servitude after 4-7 years. This is the main difference between indentured servitude and slavery. Indentured servants were eventually released from their status as property, whereas slaves were forced into slavery and never promised freedom by slave owners.

I get so excited to think of how I am going to use these ideas, posters, and passages next year. Even though I have been teaching reading for ten years, I do like the poster for providing the visual for students.
