Build Background Knowledge

Sandra Cisneros's book is about Mexican-American families living in a neighborhood in Chicago. Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing your students to facts about Mexico, United States' neighbor to the South, as well as Mexican immigration to the United States. Mexican immigration to the U.S. is one of the greatest migrations in the history of the world. Currently, 30 million Americans list Mexico as part of their ancestry (roughly 12%). Many Mexicans come to work in the U.S. for a short time and send money home to support their families. Others take up permanent residence in the U.S. and become Mexican-American citizens. There are only two ways to become an American citizen—by birth or by law. Mexican immigrants can become U.S. citizens by law by applying for U.S. citizenship.
