Build Background Knowledge

Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing your students to the history of Chinese immigration to the United States. Explain that when news of the California Gold Rush made its way to China, many Chinese men decided to travel across the Pacific Ocean to try to find work and gold. At the time, China had a Civil War, and life was very difficult on the Chinese people. Once the men arrived in the United States, they played an important role in the development of the West. Chinese laborers built The Transcontinental Railroad, which is one of the greatest engineering accomplishments in the 19th century. After the Gold Rush ended, many Chinese-American workers faced extreme violence and discrimination. In 1882, the government prohibited or did not allow Chinese workers from entering the U.S. and becoming citizens. This was important for all immigrants because it was the first time that the U.S. was not open to everybody.
