Teacher Modeling
will explain that good readers can retell stories that they read from books. I will explain that when readers do this, they should include enough details to make the listener interested. I will retell a familiar book to the class in a short sentence, giving few or no details. I will ask students to guess what book I am retelling. I will explain that the story was missing important and interesting details and will retell the story a second time including important details from the story. I will explain the difference between the two stories to the students.
-
Think Check
Ask: "What is the best way to retell a story?" Students should respond that including important and interesting details is the best way to retell a story.
-
Guided Practice
will practice retelling another familiar story by using important and interesting details together as a class. We will help each other add more details to our retelling. We will read My Red Balloon by Eve Bunting.
-
Independent Practice
will retell the story from My Red Balloon to a partner making sure to include interesting and important details. Note: The Independent Practice for this lesson is oral. Therefore, the teacher will need to monitor students as they as students retell the story, noting specific students who are still struggling with the concept on the Checklist. (Checklist is provided.)
TIP: Incorporating a drawing into the Independent Practice will allow the teacher time to circulate the classroom and assess students.

Like that its related to the Common Core and this lesson was very helpful
I like the allignment with common core. These lessons help me enhance my lessons and provide me with creative ideas.
this is great. In our school we are trying to get lesson together that teach each of the standard. We have put a lot of work into it and still have a long way to go. We also need more than one lesson for each standard. I think this is going to be very helpful.
