Plot 1st Grade Unit
Lessons
-
Create a “What are the parts of a story?” bulletin board. Display definitions of characters, setting, and plot. Post students’ “Plot Graphic Organizers” that were completed during reading groups and/or independent/center work.
-
Continue to have students retell the problem and solution in a story that they are reading in class or at home. They can do this orally with a partner, or in writing. Students can use the Independent Practice Worksheet for Lesson 1 to complete this activity.
-
Have students identify characters, setting, problem, and solution and then write a story or skit using those elements. They can use Independent Practice for Lesson 3 to structure their ideas.
-
Read most of a story aloud, but do not read the solution to the problem. Have students write a letter to the character, offering the character a solution to his or her problem. Share some of the students’ solutions. Then, read the rest of the story aloud.
-
Provide students with the beginning and middle of a story, including the problem. Have students complete the story and invent a solution to the problem.
-
Ask students to share problems that have happened to them, including the solutions they came up with to fix the problems. Students can write or share their problems and solutions aloud.
