Not Provided: My Big Truck Book by Roger Priddy, scissors, chart paper, markers

  • Teacher Modeling

    will read aloud My Big Truck Book by Roger Priddy and discuss the similarities of the trucks in each group. I will explain the categories of trucks. (Example Chart is provided.)

  • Think Check

    Ask: "How did the author of My Big Truck Book decide to group the trucks?" Students should respond that he grouped the trucks based on how they are the same or similar.

  • Guided Practice

    will sort the students in the class into two groups: boys or girls. Then, we will sort the students in the class into two different groups: tall or short. We will discuss how we can group people and things into many different groups.

  • Independent Practice

    will cut out pictures of trucks and sort them into two groups of your choice. (Independent Practice Worksheets are provided.)

The playground bully was picking on John, until his big brother came and rescued him. After our car broke down, a kind police officer rescued us.
Students provide examples Can you think of a time that you might need to be rescued? Start by saying, “I might need to be rescued ______________.”

Build Student Background Knowledge

Pause at the last page of My Big Truck Book and ask students if they have seen a garbage truck in their neighborhood. Where does a garbage truck take garbage? Explain that garbage trucks haul garbage to landfills, where the garbage is buried in the ground.
