Unit Extension Ideas

  • Have students look at pictures of animals (from My Big Animal Book) and write what group they belong to. (See Additional Activity A in Teacher and Student Materials below.)
  • Have students add a picture that belongs in two given groups. (See Additional Activity B in Teacher and Student Materials below.)
  • Provide students with two categories: plants and animals. Have students draw pictures of objects that would fit into those categories. (See Additional Activity C in Teacher and Student Materials below.)
  • Create a class Alphabet Big Book. Assign each child in the class a different letter of the alphabet. Provide students with old magazines. Have them cut out and label pictures from the magazines that start with their particular letter of the alphabet. They can glue the pictures onto large sheets of paper to create the pages in the class book.
  • On paper, write sight words and words from read aloud books or reading groups; cut out and provide a set for each student. Then, have students sort the words into different categories such as rhyming words, theme words (animals or colors), short vowels, long vowels, beginning sounds or ending sounds.
  • If Genre has already been taught, have students sort books into two groups: true and make-believe.
  • Create a class Big Book of members of a particular group such as animals, foods, or community helpers. The class can work together creating each group and later have individual students add to each page. Encourage students to add drawings to the lists.
