Part 1: “The First Thanksgiving”
Read the passage “The First Thanksgiving” out loud to your students. Alternatively, students can read the passage independently or as a group.
Question 1: What did the Pilgrims do during their harvest celebration with the Wampanoag people?
Sample student answer:
- The Pilgrims ate.
- The Pilgrims played games.
- The Pilgrims told stories.
Question 2: The Pilgrims ate, played games, and told stories to celebrate and give thanks. What were the Pilgrims probably thankful for?
Sample student answer: The Pilgrims were probably thankful for the help Squanto gave them with hunting and planting.
Part 2: The Treasure
Question 3: What does Isaac do to give thanks?
Sample student answer:
- Isaac builds a house of prayer.
- Isaac writes in the house of prayer that sometimes you have to travel far to find what is near.
- Isaac sends the captain a ruby.
Question 4: What is Isaac thankful for?
Sample student answer:
- Isaac is thankful for the treasure he found.
- Isaac is thankful to the captain for telling him where the treasure was.
Part 3: "The First Thanksgiving” and The Treasure
Question 5: What is similar, or the same, about what the Pilgrims do during the harvest celebration and what Isaac does after finding the treasure?
Sample student answer (may vary):
- The Pilgrims and Isaac are both giving thanks.
- The Pilgrims and Isaac are both sharing something with other people.
Question 6: Sharing is something that the Pilgrims did and something that Isaac does. Why might people choose to give thanks by sharing with others? Support your answer with details from the passage and the book.
Sample student answer: If people help you get something good, you might feel like they should get part of it in return. Squanto helped the Pilgrims get food, so they had a celebration with food to show their thanks. The captain helped Isaac in his search for treasure, so Isaac later sends him part of the treasure.
