- Questions 1 and 2 refer to the passage “Good Night.” Questions 3 and 4 refer to the book Where Do Polar Bears Live?. Questions 5 and 6 refer to both the passage and the book.

Part 1: "Good Night"
Read the passage “Good Night” out loud to your students. Alternatively, students can read the passage independently or as a group.
Question 1: What does it mean for an animal to hibernate in the winter?
Sample student answer: It means that the animal goes into a long, deep sleep.
Question 2: Why do animals that hibernate eat a lot of food in the fall?
Sample student answer: They need to store fat in their bodies because they live off this fat when they hibernate.
Part 2: Where Do Polar Bears Live?
Question 3: Where do the mother polar bear and her cub stay during the long Arctic winter?
Sample student answer: They stay in a den.
Question 4: When do the mother polar bear and her cub leave the den?
Sample student answer: They leave the den in the spring.
Part 3: "Good Night" and Where Do Polar Bears Live?
Question 5: Animals hibernate during what time of the year?
Sample student answer: They hibernate in the winter.
Question 6: Why do some animals hibernate during the winter?
