Lesson 1: Identifying What is the Same

Learning Goal
Identify the similarities between two pictures when comparing them.
Duration
Approximately 50 minutes
Necessary Materials
Provided: Direct Teaching Pictures, Guided Practice Pictures, Independent Practice Worksheet
Not Provided: markers

  • Teacher Modeling

    will explain what it means when we say that two things are “similar.” I will show a picture of two dogs (Picture A is provided) and identify (by circling) all the things that are the same about the two dogs. (They both have light fur, four legs, a nose, a mouth, two eyes, and they are the same size.)

  • Think Check

    Ask: "How did I find what parts of the two dogs are the same in the pictures?" Students should respond that you looked at the two pictures together and circled the parts that were the same.

  • Guided Practice

    will look at a picture two of cats (Picture B is provided) and identify (by circling) the characteristics that are the same between the two cats. (They each have four legs, two eyes, a tail, and two ears.)

  • Independent Practice

    will look at a picture of a dog and a picture of a cat. You will circle the things that are the same in the two pictures. (Independent Practice Worksheet is provided.)

    TIP: Challenge excelling students by having them write a list or sentences about the similarities in the two pictures.
