Compare and Contrast 1st Grade Unit
Lessons

Have students use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast multiple characters from books, such as Chester’s Way by Kevin Henkes, Lizzy and Skunk by Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick, and My Father the Dog by Elizabeth Bluemle.

Have students choose a character from a familiar story and explain to the class how they are similar to and different from that character.

Have students use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast objects and pictures within the same book.

Have students use a Venn diagram to compare two toys from home. This can be completed for homework. (See Additional Activity A in Teacher and Student Materials below.)

Reinforce the use of a Venn diagram by comparing and contrasting images and topics from social studies with a Venn diagram.
