Build Background Knowledge

Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing your students to the history of flight. Introduce Orville and Wilbur Wright—the Wright Brothers. Explain that as boys, they received a gift from their father that inspired them—a toy helicopter before a real helicopter existed. Flight in the 1800s was just a dream. The brothers became bicycle shop owners in Ohio and tried to design a flying device with wings that could lift it into the air. It stayed in the air using an engine and was controlled by a human being in the plane. They designed a mechanical glider aircraft that would launch from Kittyhawk, North Carolina in 1903. Share pictures of the first airplane with your class. Twenty years later, Amelia Earhart would take off on her first flight over Los Angeles.
