Build Background Knowledge

Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing your students to the meaning of adoption and foster care. Explain that children must have a parent or guardian in the U.S., but sometimes biological parents cannot take care of their children because of personal hardships, or difficult situations in their lives. Foster care is a system that allows families who can help out to support a child who needs a home. Families who support these children are called "foster parents," and they provide food, shelter, and care. If a foster family and child want to make the arrangement permanent, or fixed, the parents can apply for adoption.
