Part 1: "The Holocaust"
 
Read the passage “The Holocaust” out loud to your students. Alternatively, students can read the passage independently or as a group.
 
Question 1: What was known as "the Jewish question?"
 
Sample student answer: "The Jewish question" was what Hitler called anything having to do with the treatment of Jewish people.
 
Question 2: What was the Nazi government’s answer to "the Jewish question"?
 
Sample student answer:
  • Jewish people who were still in Germany and Nazi-controlled territories were rounded up.
  • Jewish people were sent to concentration camps to work hard hours or be killed.
 

Part 2: Passage to Freedom: The Sugihara Story

 
Question 3: In Passage to Freedom: The Sugihara Story, why did the Jews from Poland run away from their homes?
 
Sample student answer: They ran away because if they stayed, they would have been killed by the Nazi soldiers that had taken over their country.
 
Question 4: What did the refugees do to save their lives when they went to Lithuania?
 
Sample student answer: They asked Sugihara to issue hundreds of visas so they could travel to other countries and escape the Nazis.
