Part 1: "Portrait of an Artist"

Read the passage “Portrait of an Artist” out loud to your students. Alternatively, students can read the passage independently or as a group.

Question 1: What jobs has Phong Chung had?

Sample student answer: At minimum, students should respond that Phong Chung has been a construction worker and a publisher. They may add that he has also tried working as a painter.

Question 2: Based on the article, if Phong Chung could have any job he wanted, what would it be? Support your answer with evidence from the passage.

Sample student answer: Responses may vary, as long as they are supported by the passage. Students may respond that Phong Chung would most like to be a painter, since painting is what he has always loved to do.
