Part 1: “Moka the Little Golden Dog”

Read the passage “Moka the Little Golden Dog” out loud to your students. Alternatively, students can read the passage independently or as a group.

Question 1: What word does Moka the dog say when the narrator, Jesse, asks her how long she thinks she will love him?

Sample student answer (may vary):

Jesse and Moka care about each other. Moka always tells the truth, so when she says she will love Jesse “forevermore,” she’s sharing her true feelings. Part 2: Officer Buckle and Gloria

Question 3: What does Gloria do whenever Officer Buckle takes her to give a safety speech?

Whenever Officer Buckle takes Gloria to give a safety speech, she acts out the safety tips and makes them funny.

Question 4: What safety tip does Officer Buckle give at the very end of the story?

Sample student answer (may vary):

Officer Buckle’s last safety tip is “ALWAYS STICK WITH YOUR BUDDY!”

Question 5: How do Officer Buckle and Gloria feel about each other?

Sample student answer: (may vary but should resemble the following):

Officer Buckle and Gloria care about each other, and feel friendly towards each other. Some students may note that Officer Buckle seemed to feel mad or jealous of Gloria after finding out that she was acting the safety tips out. But by the end of the story, they are “buddies” again, and feel supportive of each other as part of a single team.

Part 3: “Moka the Little Golden Dog” and Officer Buckle and Gloria

Question 6: What kind of animal plays an important part in both “Moka the Little Golden Dog” and Officer Buckle and Gloria?

Sample student answer (may vary): A dog plays an important part in both texts.

Question 7: How are Moka and Gloria alike?

Sample student answer (may vary): Moka and Gloria are alike because they are both dogs with fantastic or magical abilities; Moka is able to speak English, and Gloria is able to act things out in a funny way.

Question 8: Think about how Moka and Jesse feel about each other. Then, think about how Gloria and Officer Buckle feel about each other. How are these two relationships alike?

Sample student answer (may vary): These two relationships are both loving, friendly relationships between a (fantastic or magical) dog and a person. Also, both Moka and Gloria help their human friends in some way – Moka by making Jesse feel better, and Gloria by helping Officer Buckle with his safety speeches.

I think these are great and plan to use them!! Thanks

I really appreciate the well laid out lesson plans and the non-fiction tie in with the service dogs! We were able to apply it to real-life as we have service dogs come into our classroom four-times a year. Thank you!

Awesome! Thanks!
