Part 1: "Walking Tall"
Read the passage “Walking Tall” out loud to your students. Alternatively, students can read the passage independently or as a group.
Question 1: Ruby Bridges was one of the first African Americans to do what?
Sample student answer: Ruby Bridges was one of the first African Americans to attend an all-white elementary school in the South.
Question 2: Why was ending segregation in public schools an important part of American history?
Sample student answer (may vary but should address the idea of civil equality): Ending segregation in public schools was a big step toward treating all Americans equally.

Question 3: The astronauts described in The Moon Over Star were the first people to do what?
