Part 1: "The Buzz About Honey"
 
Read the passage “The Buzz About Honey” out loud to your students. Alternatively, students can read the passage independently or as a group.
 
Question 1: According to the passage, honey is made in five steps. Name one of those steps.
 
Sample student answer: Students may name any of the five steps listed in the passage. The steps are (1) collecting the nectar, (2) heading to the hive, (3) building the honeycomb, (4) fanning the nectar, and (5) collecting the honey.
 
Question 2: Think back to the step you named in Question 1. Describe what happens in that step.
 
Sample student answer: Responses should correspond to the step named by students in Question 1. For example, if students named fanning the nectar as a step, they should describe the bees moving their wings to turn the nectar into thick honey.
 
Part 2: The Honeybee Man
 
Question 3: Fred takes the honeycomb out of one of his beehives. Then he takes the honeycomb into the kitchen. What is one thing Fred does with the honeycomb or the honey in it when he is in the kitchen?
 
Sample student answer: Students may name anything Fred does with the honeycomb or honey while in the kitchen. His actions include (1) putting the honeycomb over a plastic tank, (2) cutting the wax caps off the honeycomb, (3) putting the honeycomb in a spinning machine, (4) pouring the honey into jars, and (5) sticking labels on the jars of honey.
 
Question 4: Think back to your answer to Question 3. What is the reason that Fred did the action you named?
 
Sample student answer: Responses should correspond to the step named by students in Question 3. For example, students may have responded to Question 3 by stating that Fred cuts the wax caps off the honeycomb. If so, they should now respond that Fred cuts off the wax caps to release the honey from the honeycomb.
 
Part 3: "The Buzz About Honey" and The Honeybee Man
 
Question 5: What is one step in the process of making honey that is mentioned by both the passage and the book?
 
Sample student answer: Responses may vary but should identify a step explicitly mentioned by both the passage and book. Examples include bees collecting the nectar and beekeepers collecting honey from the hive.
 
Question 6: Are any steps in the process of making honey more important than others? Why or why not? Support your answer with information from the passage, the book, or both.
 
Sample student answer: Responses may vary, as long as they have a basis in at least one of the texts. Students may argue that some steps mentioned in the book, such as sticking labels on the honey jars, are not important to the process of making honey. Even if the jars are not labeled, the honey-making process has still taken place. Alternatively, students may argue that because each step has a different purpose, all steps are important to making honey. That includes everything from the bees gathering nectar to beekeepers pouring honey into jars.
