Part 1: "My Bean Plant”
Read the passage “My Bean Plant” out loud to your students. Alternatively, students can read the passage independently or as a group.
Question 1: What did Grandpa give the main character?
Sample student answer: Grandpa gave the main character some green bean seeds.
Question 2: The main character put the seeds in a pot with some soil. What did the main character do when the soil felt dry?
Sample student answer: The main character added water whenever the soil felt dry.
Question 3: The main character saw a tiny stem today. According to the main character, what will happen to the bean plant over the next few weeks?
Sample student answer: Over the next few weeks, more stems and leaves will grow. Then flowers will grow, too.
Part 2: The Empty Pot
Question 4: What did the Emperor give to Ping and the other children in the land?
Students answer: The Emperor gave them special flower seeds.
Question 5: Describe how Ping took care of his seed. Give three details from the story in your answer.
Sample student answer: Ping planted the seed in a pot with soil. He watered it every day. When it did not grow, Ping planted the seed in rich black soil in a bigger pot.
Part 3: "My Bean Plant" and The Empty Pot
Question 6: Compare the ways that the main character in “My Bean Plant” and Ping in The Empty Pot took care of their seeds.
Sample student answer: Both Ping and the main character in “My Bean Plant” planted their seeds in a pot with soil and made sure to water them carefully.
Question 7: In The Empty Pot, Ping says he did his best to try and help his seed grow. Explain whether or not Ping did all of the things he needed to do to help the flower grow. Support your answer with evidence from both texts.
Sample student answer: Ping did all the things he needed to do to help the flower seed grow. He planted it in soil and watered it carefully, just like the main character in Sample student answer: “My Bean Plant.” Since the main character in “My Bean Plant” made the plant grow with soil and water, Ping did everything he needed to do to help his flower seed grow.
