Teacher Modeling
will explain that understanding where a story takes place helps us understand the story better. Where a story takes place is part of the setting. I will provide concrete examples of settings. (The setting of our class is the classroom.) I will model thinking about where Gaspard at the Seashore by Anne Gutman takes place by looking at the title and front of the book. I will model using pictures and explicit text to determine where the story takes place by reading pages 1–6 aloud. On the inside cover of the book there is a picture of blue water and brown sand. There are also trees, houses and mountains off in the distance. The book looks like it takes place at the beach.
TIP: Students at this age will find identifying “when” a story takes place to be challenging. Therefore, it is important to teach “when” and “where” separately before teaching them together.
-
Think Check
Ask: "How did I decide where the story is taking place?" Students should respond that you looked at the pictures and looked for clues in the text to determine where the story is taking place.
-
Guided Practice
will use pictures and information in the text to determine where the story takes place as I read the remainder of the book aloud. We will discuss how we determine where the story takes place (pictures, specific text).
-
Independent Practice
will illustrate where a new story takes place and explain (orally, in writing, or by labeling the picture) how you determined this. (Independent Practice Worksheet is provided.) Note: Choose a new book with a clear setting. You may choose to read only a part of the book that gives clear clues to the setting.
