Lesson 2: Substituting Nouns

Learning Goal: Substitute pronouns for nouns.
Duration: Approximately 50 minutes
Necessary Materials: Provided: Example Transparency or Chart for Direct Teaching and Guided Practice, Example Chart for Guided Practice, Independent Practice Worksheet (Older), Independent Practice Worksheet (Younger)
Not Provided: Chart paper, markers

Teacher Modeling

will review pronouns and explain how to identify which nouns they replace. I will put the Pronouns: Who or What are They Talking About? chart on the overhead projector or on chart paper and model how to identify the noun “Bailey” in the first sentence. I will then identify the pronoun “her” and explain that this pronoun refers to Bailey. I will repeat this with the second sentence. (Direct Teaching and Guided Practice Example Chart is provided in Teacher and Student Materials below.)
Think Check

Ask: How did I change the noun to a pronoun in the sentence? Students should respond that you looked at the noun in the sentence and thought about if it is a person or thing and if it is a girl or a boy, and then thought about a pronoun that would make sense.
Guided Practice

will work together to identify the nouns and pronouns in the remaining sentences. We will explain how the pronoun replaces a noun in each sentence. We will also read the sentences on chart paper (Guided Practice Example Chart is provided below) and replace the underlined nouns with the appropriate pronouns.
Independent Practice

will complete the What Should the Pronoun Be? Worksheet by replacing the underlined nouns with the appropriate pronouns. (Student Independent Practice Worksheets are provided below.)
