Lesson 3: Dictionary

Lesson Plan

The Life Cycle of a Beetle

The Life Cycle of a Beetle
Learning Goal
Use a dictionary to determine the meaning of an unknown word.
Duration
Approximately 50 minutes
Necessary Materials
Provided: Independent Practice Worksheet
Not Provided: The Life Cycle of a Beetle by Bobbie Kalman, dictionaries
  • Teacher Modeling

will explain that sometimes when I am reading, if I don’t know what a word means, I use a dictionary to look up the meaning of the word. I will read the section, “What is a beetle?” (pages 6–7) in The Life Cycle of a Beetle aloud. I will use a dictionary to look up the words “thorax” and “organs.” I will model how to find each word in the dictionary using alphabetical order and guide words. I will also model choosing the correct definition for each word by reading all the definitions and then rereading the sentence in the text. I will think aloud as I identify the correct meaning of each word based on what makes sense in the text.

  • Think Check

Ask: How did I determine the meaning of unknown words? Students should respond that you used a dictionary. You used guide words on the top of the pages to help you find the words. Then once you found the right word you read all the definitions and thought about which definition makes the most sense in the context of the sentence.

  • Guided Practice

will use a dictionary to look up the meaning of the words “abdomen,” “hind,” and “compound” from The Life Cycle of a Beetle. We will determine the correct definition of each word by thinking about the context of the paragraph or sentence. We will explain how we determined which meaning of each word was correct.

  • Independent Practice

will read the section, “All grown up” (pages 18–19 from The Life Cycle of a Beetle) and use a dictionary to look up the words “species,” “mandibles,” “fierce,” and “larvae.” You will use the context of the paragraph or sentence to determine the correct meaning for each word. (Student Independent Practice is provided below in Teacher and Student Materials.) Note: You will have to provide students with pages 18–19 of The Life Cycle of a Beetle so that they can read the pages and use them with the Independent Practice worksheet.

Build Student Vocabulary predators

Tier 2 Word: predators
Contextualize the word as it is used in the story “Dung beetles and carrion beetles lay eggs in burrows to hide them and keep them safe from predators.”
Explain the meaning student-friendly definition) A predator is an animal that hunts other animals for food. The dung and carrion beetles hide their eggs to keep them safe from predators or from animals that may eat their eggs.
Students repeat the word Say the word predators with me: predators
Teacher gives examples of the word in other contexts Lions are predators because they eat zebras and buffalo. Sharks are predators because they eat small fishes.
Students provide examples Why are some beetles predators? Start by saying, “Some beetles are predators because ____________.”
Students repeat the word again. What word are we talking about? predators
Additional Vocabulary Words species, prey

Build Student Background Knowledge

After reading the section, "What is a Beetle?" explain that insects are not the only "arthropods." Arachnids (spiders) and Crustaceans (crabs, lobsters, and shrimp) also belong to the arthropod family. All of these animals have an exoskeleton or hard protective shell on the outside of their body, rather than the inside. Draw an "arthropod" cluster diagram on the board, with the various arthropods discussed branching out from the center.

This is an excellent source to teach guided reading.

I was not able to teach this lesson because the book is so hard to find. It was not available in my school library, the public library or at Barnes and Noble. In order to teach this lesson, you will have to order the book from Amazon and wait for it to be delivered.
