Lesson 1: Analyzing Sequence using Graphic Organizers

Lesson Plan

Learning Goal
Analyze the sequence of events in fiction using textual evidence in a graphic organizer.
Duration
Approximately 50 minutes
Necessary Materials
Provided: Direct Teaching and Guided Practice Passage, “Jose’s Baseball Routine;” Direct Teaching and Guided Practice Worksheet; Independent Practice Passage, “Sarah’s Perfect Day” and Worksheet
Not Provided: N/A
  • Teacher Modeling

will explain that we can use different types of graphic organizers to plot the sequence of events in a story. I will introduce and explain the two graphic organizers (provided) that we will use to analyze the sequence of events from a passage. (See Direct Teaching and Guided Practice Student Worksheet, provided below in Teacher and Student Materials.) For example: Each graphic organizer gives us some of the events in the text and we have to decide what comes after and before these events. In the first graphic organizer, the first two events are given. We have to identify what happens after Jose got dressed in his uniform but before Jose runs around the bases three times. I will read “Jose’s Baseball Routine” and model using the graphic organizer to identify the two missing events in sequence.

  • Think Check

Ask: How did I use the graphic organizer to analyze the sequence of events? Students should respond that you read the events that were given in the graphic organizer and thought about what main events came before and after them in the story.

  • Guided Practice

will reread “Jose’s Baseball Routine” and work together to determine which events fit in the missing steps on the second graphic organizer. We will confirm our answers with evidence from the text.

  • Independent Practice

will read “Sarah’s Perfect Day” and use the graphic organizers to analyze the sequence of events in the story. You will base your answers on evidence from the text. (Student Independent Practice passage and worksheet are provided below.)

Build Student Vocabulary season

Tier 2 Word: season
Contextualize the word as it is used in the story “It was time for Jose’s first baseball game of the season.”
Explain the meaning student-friendly definition) A season is a part of the year. It is a period when people do a particular activity. When it was time for Jose’s first baseball game of the season, it was the time of the year when Jose would play baseball.
Students repeat the word Say the word season with me: season.
Teacher gives examples of the word in other contexts The football season is my favorite time of year. During tourist season, the city is crowded with people from other cities.
Students provide examples What special activities do you participate in during a season? Start by saying, “During the __________ season I ________________.”
Students repeat the word again. What word are we talking about? season
Additional Vocabulary Words routine, worn

Build Student Background Knowledge

Before reading the passage, explain that you are going to read about a character named Jose that plays baseball. Jose plays in a baseball league. A "league" is a sports association that arranges matches or games for its members. Major League Baseball is the highest baseball league in North America.

Awesome lesson plan! Excellent job defining content.

great plans

I used this passage with a guided reading group to teach sequence! It was a great way to make student USE THE TEXT to support their answer. The different graphic organizers for each passage also helped students understand that sequencing can differ, as long as events are in the correct order! GREAT READS!

YOU people rock. I would encourage everyone to donate. This is a gracious and great site.
