Unit Extension Ideas

Have students discuss which genres tend to be written in first person (autobiography, memoir, fiction, and personal narrative) and third person (biography, fairy tales, nonfiction, and fiction).

Identify the point of view of books read in reading groups, literature groups, independent reading, and for homework. As a class, create a chart classifying books according to first person or third person narration.

Choose an author to study. Does this author tend to write from one point of view or from different points of view? Does the author switch points of view within the book? How does this add interest to the story?

Students should use different points of view in their own writing. Discuss which points of view are appropriate for writing different kinds of texts.

Students can keep personal journals. After several weeks, have students identify the point of view they use for each journal entry by circling or highlighting clue words in their entries.

Read several classic fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, or the Three Little Pigs. Have students rewrite a fairy tale from a different point of view.

As students read the Concept of Comprehension Reading Passages or newspaper articles, have them circle or highlight clue words that identify the point of view in which the piece was written.
