Lesson 2: Explicit Information in Fiction
Lesson Plan
Freckle Juice | 370L

- Learning Goal
- Use explicit information to answer questions about a fiction text.
- Duration
- Approximately 50 minutes
- Necessary Materials
- Provided: Example Chart for Direct Teaching, Example Chart for Guided Practice, Independent Practice Worksheet
Not Provided: Freckle Juice by Judy Blume, chart paper, markers
-
Teacher Modeling
will read questions aloud from a chart that asks explicit questions about information in Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. (Direct Teaching Example Chart is provided below in Teacher and Student Materials.) I will read Chapter 1 of Freckle Juice aloud, stopping to answer the questions about the text.
TIP: Model how to skim and reread text if students have a difficult time finding the answers to the questions.
-
Think Check
Ask: How did I answer questions about a fiction text? Students should respond that you first read the questions. Then, you read the text and stopped and wrote down the answers to the questions as you came upon them in the text.
-
Guided Practice
will review explicit questions about information from Chapter 2 (Guided Practice Example Chart is provided below). We will listen as I read Chapter 2 aloud, stopping to answer the questions on the chart together.
-
Independent Practice
will read Chapters 3, 4, and 5 independently and answer the questions on the worksheet. (Student Independent Practice is provided below.)
TIP: Students will need a copy of the book or a copy of Chapters 3, 4, and 5 to complete the Independent Practice. Differentiate the Independent Practice by having students answer questions about their leveled Guided Reading book instead of Freckle Juice.
