- Identify explicit information in fiction.
- Duration
- Approximately 50 minutes
- Necessary Materials

Not Provided: Stellaluna by Janell Cannon, chart paper, markers
-
Teacher Modeling
will explain that we can find information in fiction books as well. I will introduce the book Stellaluna by Janell Cannon. I will read aloud questions from a chart, to be answered as I read the book Stellaluna. (Example chart provided). I will read the first two pages of Stellaluna and model answering the first question. For example, say: "I know the first question asks which animal struck Mother Bat. After reading this page, I know that the animal was an owl." I will write the answer on the chart. The next question asks what the first bug that Stellaluna ate was. I will continue reading and you raise your hands when you think you hear the answer.
-
Think Check
Ask: "How did I know which animal struck mother bat in Stellaluna?" Students should respond that you re-read that part of the text and found it right in the text.
-
Guided Practice
will continue reading Stellaluna and answering the questions on the chart, stopping each time we hear an answer to one of our questions.
-
Independent Practice
will read the passage, “Justin’s Bad Day” (provided) and answer the questions using the passage. You will identify (by circling text) where you found the answers in the passage.
TIP: You may need to read aloud the passage and questions for the Independent Practice.
