Lesson 1: Actions

Lesson Plan

No, David! | BR

No, David!
Learning Goal
Identify and describe the actions of a character.
Duration
Approximately 50 minutes
Necessary Materials
Provided: Example Chart for Direct Teaching and Guided Practice: Lessons 1 and 2, Independent Practice Worksheet
Not Provided: No, David! by David Shannon, David Gets in Trouble by David Shannon, chart paper, markers
  • Teacher Modeling

will explain that an action is something someone does, such as running or writing or eating. I will give several examples of actions commonly done at school. I will introduce the book No, David! by David Shannon and tell students that I will be looking at the pictures and text and thinking about what actions the main character, David, is doing in the story. I will begin charting David’s actions by using picture clues and text in the book. (Example Chart is provided.) I will explain how I am identifying actions from the book (by looking at the pictures, reading the text, and thinking about the story).

TIP: If students need support in understanding the term “action”, play charades and have students describe your “actions”.

  • Think Check

Ask: "How did I identify David's actions in the book?" Students should respond that you looked at the pictures and read the text and thought about what David was doing.

  • Guided Practice

will read David Gets in Trouble by David Shannon and chart David’s actions in the story by using picture clues and text. (Example Chart is provided.)

  • Independent Practice

will draw a picture and write a sentence identifying one of David’s actions from David Gets in Trouble. (Independent Practice Worksheet is provided.) Note: Save the chart for use with Lesson 2.

Build Student Vocabulary enough

Tier 2 Word: enough
Contextualize the word as it is used in the story When David had a mouth full of food, his mother said, “That’s enough, David!”
Explain the meaning student-friendly definition) Enough means having as much as you need. When David's mother said, “enough,” she meant that he did not need to eat any more.
Students repeat the word Say the word enough with me: enough.
Teacher gives examples of the word in other contexts I ate enough food to keep me full until lunch. When I go shopping, I try to buy enough milk to last a week. I can never get enough of my favorite books. I can read them all day.
Students provide examples What is something that you have enough of? Start by saying, “I have enough _____________.”
Students repeat the word again. What word are we talking about? enough
Additional Vocabulary Words instant, quiet

Build Student Background Knowledge

In No, David!, stop after charting David's actions on pp. 9-10. (David is banging on pots and pans). Explain that David is pretending to be a drummer in a marching band. A marching band is a band that marches and plays music at the same time, often in a parade or at a sports game. Instruments in a marching band include trumpets, horns, drums, saxophones, and many others. Share a picture of a real marching band or play a clip of a marching band playing a song for your class. Point out the elaborate uniforms, like David's shoulder tassels on page 10 in the book.
